May is National Stroke Awareness Month. The American Stroke Association encourages you to be a #strokehero by controlling your own risk factors for stroke, such as blood pressure. Know the signs of stroke - F.A.S.T. - so that you can take action quickly and call 9-1-1. Time is brain. We have our own stroke heroes here at Hillcrest. Today, we would like to introduce you to Michelle Ferrell, MEd, CCC-SLP, speech therapist at Kaiser Rehabilitation Center at Hillcrest Medical Center. “I’ve been working with stroke patients for 16 years,” Michelle shares. “I try to connect with them – find out what their interests are, talk about their children and grandchildren. I usually talk to a family member and ask these questions. Stroke patients can lose their ability to communicate functionally just to get their daily needs across. They can also have problems swallowing. We are working with patients who are inpatient three hours a day minimum. They’re getting the highest level, most intensive level of therapy that they can get here. We can see improvement quickly.”

We are proud to announce Kaiser Rehabilitation Center at Hillcrest Medical Center has been recognized in the top 10 percent of nearly 800 qualifying rehabilitation facilities across the country as a “Top Performer” by Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation. The first rehabilitation hospital in Tulsa, Kaiser Rehabilitation Center has changed the lives for more than 40 years through inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation of patients who have suffered from stroke, brain injuries and other debilitating conditions and illnesses. At the heart of Kaiser, are the people. Today, we would like to introduce you to physical therapist Ashley Seck. “I like having people I can go to and ask for their opinion or for their help. It’s a family here. The best part of my day is when I can surprise patients and help them realize they can do something they didn’t think they could do. I take pride in being able to show patients that they have it in them and what they can do. Being able to be the one to show them that light is powerful. I like building that confidence in them.” -Ashley Seck, DPT, Kaiser Rehabilitation Center
